Teen and adult arrested after double stabbing in Rumford

Rumford, Maine – Police arrested a 19‑year‑old man and a 15‑year‑old girl following a stabbing that left a man and a woman wounded on Sunday morning in downtown Rumford. The victims were taken to Rumford Hospital where they are expected to survive, officials said.

The incident took place just before 9 a.m. at 209 Waldo Street, a commercial block in the heart of the city. A 911 call reported an assault, and another caller heard a man shout that “someone was trying to kill him” while a knife was heard striking the air. When police arrived the suspects had fled on foot. Two residents of Rumford, a 44‑year‑old man who suffered a stab wound to his back and a 37‑year‑old woman who sustained a knife cut to her abdomen, were transported to the hospital and are reportedly stable.

Rumford police, assisted by deputies from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, located the suspects near the 300 block of Waldo Street. When officers approached, the two fled again. The chase on foot led to a series of arrests: 19‑year‑old Jazya D. Swan of Lewiston was found on the porch of a home on Cumberland Street, and a 15‑year‑old girl from Lisbon was discovered at another house on Waldo Street. Both suspects were taken into custody.

Swan was booked into the Oxford County Jail, where he is awaiting trial, and a cash bail of $20,000 was set. The 15‑year‑old girl was transferred to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland and will face juvenile court proceedings.

Both suspects face charges of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and refusing to submit to arrest. The teen also carries an elevated aggravated assault charge, while Swan is charged as an accomplice to that felony.

Investigators are looking into whether the stabbing was connected to a separate shooting incident that occurred on October 14 at the same address. “The event is still under investigation,” a police spokesperson said.

The Rumford Police Department has not released the full details of the motive for the attack. The two victims are currently in treatment at Rumford Hospital, and both are expected to recover.

Rumford residents are left reeling after a quiet Sunday morning was turned into a scene of violence. Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
