The characters from four children’s picture books are coming to the Morse High School stage this weekend. Local nonprofit Midcoast Literacy will present a live Readers Theater performance from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the school auditorium.

Before the show there will be activities for kids inspired by the stories starting at 1 p.m. For families with children ages 4-10, the one-hour performance by local, professional actors will feature “Mercy Watson to the Rescue” by Kate DiCamillo, “Bears Don’t Share!” by Lorna Scobie, “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” by Kevin Henkes and “It’s Raining Bats & Frogs” by Rebecca Colby.

Tickets are $10 each or $35 for a family (four to eight people) and can be purchased at midcoastliteracy.org or by calling 207-443-6384.

“Putting together this active and visual take on children’s books is one of our favorite ways to encourage reading at home,” Daniel Burson, Midcoast Literacy’s executive director, said in a prepared release. “Seeing the kids getting into the pre-show activities and then watching the show, with faces painted, intent on the stories, is always a thrill. And it’s all about sharing the love of reading with families.”

Readers Theater is a style of live performance that blends the reading aloud of a book with theatrical elements. The cast of actors simultaneously narrates the story and brings added life to the characters through voice, expression and movement. In “Mercy Watson to the Rescue,” porcine wonder Mercy Watson creates havoc in the neighborhood when her decision to snuggle in the Watsons’ bed causes trouble and the fire department is called. In “Bears Don’t Share!”, with winter on the way, Squirrel and his friend Bear are on the hunt for some food. There’s just one problem: Bears don’t share! In “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse,” Lilly loves school and her favorite teacher, Mr. Slinger, until her new favorite musical purse distracts the class and has to be taken away. And in “It’s Raining Bats & Frogs,” what’s Delia the witch to do when a rainstorm threatens the annual Halloween parade? Grab her magic wand and make it fun!

Midcoast Literacy’s Oct. 24 Readers Theater event is sponsored by Bowdoin College and Fiction: A Novel Bookshop. All proceeds will support Midcoast Literacy’s Read Together tutoring program for children ages 6-14.
