Art center presents film series with latest exhibition in Rockland

Art center presents film series with latest exhibition in Rockland
100%

The Center for Maine Contemporary Art and Rockland’s Strand Theatre will present a three-part film series in conjunction with “Because the Sky is Blue,” on view at CMCA through Jan. 17, 2027. Bringing together three distinct approaches to filmmaking, the series extends the exhibition’s exploration of painting and its boundaries into the medium of film.

The first screening is at 5 p.m. Sunday. The featured film will be Derek Jarman’s “Blue” (1993), his final film. It’s a deeply personal and formally daring meditation on memory, love, mortality and the expressive possibilities of color. Created during the final years of Jarman’s life, as he confronted AIDS-related illness and deteriorating vision, the film challenges conventional ideas of what cinema can communicate through images.

The screening will be introduced by and followed by a Q&A with Tom Sapsford, associate professor in classical studies at Boston College, whose research includes Jarman’s engagement with classical antiquity and gay counterculture.

The second in the series, “Double Tide” (2009) by Sharon Lockhart, will be shown at 5 p.m. on Nov. 1. The film documents the work of a female clam digger on the mudflats of Midcoast Maine. Filmed during the rare occurrence of two daylight low tides, the film offers a portrait of a singular form of labor defined by the elemental forces of nature. Lockhart’s work is also featured in “Because the Sky is Blue.”

The event will include an introduction by CMCA Curator and Interim Director Grant Wahlquist.

The third and final screening is at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 8. This is a special family-friendly screening of Albert Lamorisse’s short film “The Red Balloon” (1956), following a young boy and a spirited red balloon through the streets of Paris. After the screening, attendees are invited to CMCA’s ArtLab to create and decorate their own hanging paper balloon sculptures.

All film screenings are at Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., Rockland. Visit rocklandstrand.com for tickets.
