The acclaimed Ying Quartet will return to Brunswick on Monday as part of the Bowdoin International Music Festival’s Music at the Mill series. Doors open at 6 p.m., the concert is at 7 p.m. and there will be a post-concert reception at 8:15 p.m. at Dutchman’s at Fort Andross Mill, 14 Maine St.
The Ying Quartet — Robin Scott and Janet Ying, violin; Phillip Ying, viola; and David Ying, cello — will play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 in C Major, K. 465, “Dissonance,” and Johannes Brahms’ String Quartet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 51, No. 1.
Mozart and Brahms approached these string quartets with both reverence and ambition. Mozart’s “Dissonance,” dedicated to Joseph Haydn, opens with famously enigmatic harmonies before unfolding into music of extraordinary warmth and vitality. Nearly a century later, Brahms wrestled with the legacy of Ludwig van Beethoven as he composed his first string quartet, revising and refining it over many years. The result is a work of remarkable intensity and craftsmanship, balancing dramatic energy with moments of charm and wit.
