Michael Edes

Cumberland’s Town Council chair pleaded not guilty to operating under the influence earlier this month.

Michael Edes, 68, was arrested by the Yarmouth Police Department the evening of Sept. 7. He refused a breath, blood or urine test and received a court summons for Oct. 27.

Edes’ attorney, Jon Goodman, entered a not-guilty plea on his client’s behalf on Oct. 9 and arraignment was cancelled. Goodman previously said that Edes “absolutely” did not operate a vehicle while under the influence.

“(H)e looks forward to the opportunity to share his side of the story in court,” Goodman said in an email on Sept. 17.

His next court hearing was set for March 25.

Edes and other Cumberland town councilors have been largely silent about the arrest.

A person convicted of an OUI who does not have a prior OUI conviction within the past 10 years typically has their license suspended for 150 days and they must pay a minimum fine of $500, which increases to a minimum of $600 if they refused a chemical test.
