Will federal election monitors remain neutral? | Letter

Federal election monitors are coming to Maine. The DOJ has done this for decades. So, under normal circumstances it should be no cause for concern. But these are not normal times. The Trump administration has already signaled plans to contest close election losses with its suit to deny a Democratic election victory in Alaska, and demands that states use flawed lists of supposed non-citizen voters.
Will Trump’s law enforcers remain neutral if Troy Jackson wins the Senate seat? Hopefully, the monitors will do what they have done in the past, ensure elections are conducted according to existing law — not impose new interpretations of how states should conduct their elections. We’ll see.
The concern over federal monitors could prove to be a tempest in a teapot. Or it could be the beginning of the end of democracy as we have known it.
