Remember: All citizens get to vote | Letter

I was struck by the comment from Maine Wire’s Steve Robinson in last Sunday’s paper about people bringing “jobless Somali bums to vote” (“State monitoring complaints of voter harassment in Lewiston,” Oct. 25).
The scornful disapproval here misses something fundamental about our country. Whether one is a citizen by birth or by the hard work of earning it, every election America lives out its amazing creed: citizens get to decide how they shall be governed. Whether a citizen has a job or not, whether they were born here or not, whether they have the approval of Mr. Robinson or not, they get to vote.
It is a marvel worth celebrating every election. The proper emotion here is not scorn, Mr. Robinson. It’s gratitude that, unlike countless millions from the past and the present, we get to live in such a country.
