Biddeford Tigers Upset Underdog Marshwood, Set Stage for Playoff Push

Biddeford, ME – The Biddeford High School football team, the Tigers, turned the tables on a season‑long favorite when they defeated the undefeated Marshwood squad. The win has propelled the Tigers to a 5‑2 record and third place in the Class B South Hall standings, setting the stage for a potentially playoff‑seeding finish in their upcoming game against Cheverus.

The Tigers entered the matchup as clear underdogs, but Coach Steve Allosso kept his focus on excellence. “I tell the kids to pursue excellence,” he said. “They grasped excellence the second half of that game, because Marshwood is an outstanding team.” His words seemed to resonate, as Biddeford’s defense tightened and the offense found its rhythm.

Senior quarterback Ernie Dore, who has seen his teammates transition from backups to starters, cited experience as a key factor. “A lot of guys this year were starting last year on both sides,” Dore explained. “I think that’s really played a factor.” He also reflected on the community’s support, noting, “Last year, they supported us a lot, even when we were 1‑7. Now, there’s a lot more people supporting us.”

The Tigers have been hampered by injuries throughout the season, forcing the team to rely on second‑ and third‑string players at times. Yet even with a rotated lineup, the victory over Marshwood felt like a glimpse of the program’s potential. Junior receiver‑running back Estevao Lembissa described the win as the best performance of the season. “It’s the best we played all season, in my opinion,” he said. “We gotta bring that to next week, because we have nothing to lose.”

Biddeford’s record now stands at 5‑2, and they are ranked third in the Class B South Hall standings heading into the season finale on Friday against Cheverus. A victory could secure the Tigers the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, giving them a first‑round bye and the chance to host a semifinal game in front of a home crowd.

The Tigers’ dramatic turnaround—from a 1‑7 finish last year to a competitive, playoff‑contending team—has earned them recognition as Varsity Maine’s Boys Team of the Week. Their story exemplifies resilience, community support, and a renewed commitment to excellence.
