Cheverus/Waynflete tops Maine volleyball poll; Washington Academy, Greely rise to tie for second

The Varsity Maine volleyball poll released after the October 20 games shows Cheverus‑Waynflete (the Stags) claiming the No. 1 spot for the first time this season. The ranking shift marks the third change at the top of the poll in the last four weeks, underscoring how competitive the state has been. Cheverus‑Waynflete finished the regular season on a nine‑game winning streak and will enter the Class A postseason as the top seed, with the playoffs set to begin on Thursday.

Washington Academy and Greely, both Class B schools, have moved up from third and fourth place to share the No. 2 ranking. Washington Academy earned 77 points on two first‑place votes, while Greely matched that total on one first‑place vote. Greely’s week was highlighted by wins over No. 7 York, No. 8 Gardiner, and the Lewiston‑Lisbon team, pushing the Rangers into the top‑two tier.

Thornton Academy, the team that held the No. 1 rank last week and remains the only school to defeat Cheverus‑Waynflete this season, slipped to No. 5 after losses to Gorham and Scarborough. The fall season has seen teams routinely beat each other, and the current ranking reflects the latest set of results.

Playoff picture

Each of Maine’s four volleyball regions—Class A through D—has at least three teams in contention for the state title. The current top seeds are:

  • Class A: Cheverus‑Waynflete
  • Class B: Greely
  • Class C: Gardiner
  • Class D: George Stevens Academy

The postseason schedule will test whether the current leaders can maintain their momentum or if lower‑seeded teams will stage upsets. With a history of closely fought games, fans can expect an exciting week of competition.

The poll is compiled by the Varsity Maine staff, who evaluate all games played up to the cutoff date. As the season moves into its final stretch, the rankings are poised to shift again, but for now Cheverus‑Waynflete sits at the summit of Maine high‑school volleyball.
