South Portland pier will remain closed

The pier at Thomas Knight Park will remain closed, at least for now.
An engineer inspected it Thursday and decided that it needs a full evaluation, tentatively scheduled for later this month, before the city can determine if it’s structurally sound, according to Shara Dee, the city’s communications officer.
The city [closed the pier](https://www.facebook.com/cityofsouthportland/posts/pfbid0zAedzvYoVpuwso993XM4e4C9bv4C3zuWvrgQKR8DyhUqKayQehNUaZqX92saoZaql) to the public in June following guidance it received from its insurance provider. Potential structural issues pose safety risks.
Last May, the city determined that the dock that was attached to the pier was no longer safe and had it removed.
Depending on the results of the full inspection, the pier may reopen or the city will work with an engineering firm on repairs. At this time, the city does not have a reopening timeline, nor does it know the cost of repairs.
