A research team has reestablished communication with an uncrewed vessel that it had lost track of in the Gulf of Maine on Oct. 12.
The vessel, a SeaTrac USV, was located roughly 90 miles off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts, the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems said in an update Friday night.
The SeaTrac was about 30 miles southeast of Frenchman Bay when the project team lost contact with it, according to a notice from the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems that was shared by the Maine Lobstermen’s Association.
Researchers had offered a $5,000 reward for the public’s help locating the vessel, which was monitoring a harmful algal bloom in the Gulf of Maine.
The team plans to recover the vessel on Sunday, according to the update Friday night.
