A duck hunter was rescued from deep mud by Sebasticook Lake in Newport on Friday afternoon.
Newport Fire Chief Jeff Chretien said the man walked out on the lake bed to retrieve a duck he had shot when he became stuck.
The fire department responded around 12:40 p.m. Friday after a member of the nearby American Legion post spotted the man and called 911. Chretien said the man was with some friends who attempted to free him but had no luck.
First responders put ladders over the mud and walked across the rungs to where the man was stranded. They tied a rope around the man, who put his weight onto a jet sled he had with him. He had to kick his waders off, which were full of heavy mud, Chretien said.
From there, Chretien said, authorities were able to drag the man out until he could stand on the ladder rungs.
“It was great teamwork by all the rescuers,” he said.
The man was stuck for about an hour, Chretien estimated. There were no injuries — “just pride,” he said.
