State officials are investigating the cause of a fire that killed one person and two dogs in Belfast on Friday afternoon.
Firefighters initially responded around 2:40 p.m. to a report of a fire at 142 Back Searsport Road. When they arrived at the mobile home, crews were challenged by “heavy fire conditions,” according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.
As they worked to suppress the fire, first responders discovered a body inside the home.
“The deceased individual was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an examination will be conducted to confirm the individual’s identity and determine the cause of death,” Maine State Police Major Aaron Turcotte said in a statement.
Two dogs were also found dead inside.
The Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating the fire’s cause and origin. They have “narrowed the area of origin to a rear porch that contained a laundry area,” Turcotte said, but a precise cause remains undetermined.
