Market Basket opens its doors in Scarborough next Friday

A new grocery storefront is set to open on Market Street in the town of Scarborough, Maine, as part of a chain’s ongoing expansion. The store will be located at 70 Market St., a block that has been earmarked for retail development for several years.
The chain, which has operated several supermarkets throughout the state, announced plans to add this new location after completing a feasibility study that highlighted strong local demand for additional grocery options. The move is intended to meet the needs of residents who have long relied on a handful of supermarkets for everyday shopping.
According to the chain’s spokesperson, the 70‑Market‑St. site will feature a full range of grocery items, including fresh produce, meat and dairy, pantry staples, and household supplies. The new store is expected to offer a similar layout to existing locations, with dedicated sections for organic products, prepared foods, and a bakery line. Employees will receive training on the chain’s standard customer service protocols before opening.
Scarborough officials welcomed the announcement, noting that the new store could bring jobs and stimulate the local economy. “Adding a grocery store to this part of town will not only provide more shopping choices for our residents but also create employment opportunities,” said a municipal spokesperson. The town’s planning commission had approved the site’s use for retail purposes in a recent meeting, and the chain has received all necessary permits.
While the exact opening date has not yet been set, the chain indicated that construction is slated to begin in the coming months. The project will involve renovating an existing building at the corner of Market Street and Maple Avenue, bringing the total retail space to roughly 12,000 square feet.
The expansion is part of a broader strategy by the chain to increase its presence in Maine’s coastal communities. Over the past five years, the company has added several locations across the state, positioning itself as a major player in the regional grocery market.
Residents who have lived in Scarborough for decades anticipate the new store’s arrival with excitement, citing the convenience of having a full-service supermarket closer to home. Local shoppers also hope the new location will offer competitive prices and a wider selection of local products.
As the construction phase begins, the chain has pledged to engage with the community, holding public meetings to address any concerns and gather feedback on store layout and product selection. The project’s progress will be monitored by town officials to ensure compliance with zoning regulations and community standards.
When the doors open, the new Market Street location is expected to become a central hub for groceries and daily essentials in Scarborough, continuing the chain’s mission to provide reliable, convenient shopping for Maine residents.
