Maine Matters 2026

Read all of our coverage of Maine's 2026 election or stay up to date with the latest developments through the Maine Political Report in your inbox or text messages from politics editor Kirby Wilson.

Donald Trump is a rogue president who lies, displays erratic behavior, relies on insulting rhetoric, illogical executive orders and phony legal battles with his perceived enemies. More troubling, we have a sycophantic Republican-controlled Senate willing to do Trump’s bidding.

Until Trump, the United States had been respected and perceived as an essential, trusted partner on the world stage. Regrettably, that has all but disintegrated. We’re in a terrible quandary now. It’s only going to get worse if the GOP and MAGA retain control of the Senate.

As Colby professor Dan Shea detailed in his excellent Oct. 3 op-ed (“There is no ‘bipartisan’ way to organize the Senate”), reelecting Sen. Susan Collins will likely assure continued GOP control of the Senate.  So, in order to restore our global respect and dignity — never mind our shared ethical and moral compass — Senate control must be wrested from GOP/MAGA control.

Maine can lead that effort by electing Troy Jackson. If not, it may be worse.

Nothing else matters!
