Maine Matters 2026

Read all of our coverage of Maine's 2026 election or stay up to date with the latest developments through the Maine Political Report in your inbox or text messages from politics editor Kirby Wilson.

I love Portland for its scenic beauty, architecture, music scene, leafy neighborhoods, international diversity and opportunities for flânerie. With such an array, can one be blamed for not wanting to change a thing?

But then one day we all woke up to find coastal flooding, a housing shortage, a concomitant homeless crisis and a stagnant population in a growing world.

How did this happen? A major cause is decades of resistance to change and a gradual, incremental regression. Which is why I’m supporting Joey Brunelle for Portland City Council. Joey knows that what people value is each other and has the vision to say: “Let’s do this a little differently.”

Joey is uniquely prepared to serve our city, not just because he is a policy wonk, or because he has attended hundreds of City Council meetings, but that he has the guts and compassion to work for all of us.
