The top-seeded Rangers scored five times in the second half to beat No. 6 Freeport 7-4 in the state championship game Friday at Deering High’s Memorial Field. The Rangers (15-2) have won four of the last five titles. “It’s incredible, I honestly have no words,” said Audrey Ingersoll, one of Greely’s captains who had a goal and two assists. “We’ve been looking for this since last year, when we lost in double overtime (in the playoffs) to them.” Freshman Makenna Seaver scored four goals for Greely, which ended the season with a 15-game winning streak. Freeport, the defending Class B champion, finished 11-7. Junior midfielder Karleigh Costello led the Falcons with three goals, while senior Nora Eames added a goal. Advertisement The Falcons had the edge in possession in the first quarter, methodically moving around the net, trying to set up shots, but Greely was able to make the most of its limited opportunities. Seaver notched her first goal of the game with 41.6 seconds remaining with a shot from the left of Freeport goalie Maddie Kryzek to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Seaver added her second goal with 8:15 left in the second quarter. Freeport answered five minutes later with a goal from Ames off a pass from Keely Furtney. It was 2-1 at halftime. “We always know it’s going to be a one-goal game with Freeport,” said Greely coach Becca Koelker. “It felt like that for 90 percent of the game. “We have a lot of young players and they have never been on this stage before. (Today) was all about keeping them locked in. Making some adjustments to give them some success was helpful at halftime.” The Falcons tied the game 2-2 early in the third quarter when Costello scored on a free position shot after getting knocked down from behind in front of the Greely net. The Rangers regained the lead three minutes later. Ingersoll, positioned behind the Freeport net, dished a pass to Hadley Hatch for a goal. Two minutes later, Seaver scored for the third time, off a free position shot. Advertisement “I think the nerves kind of got to us (early),” Ingersoll said. “We had a lot to prove. Once we got into the huddle and said, ‘We’ve really got to do this for each other, look beside you, that’s the person you want to win the state championship with.’ It was really (all about) working together.” Seaver scored her fourth goal with 1:12 left in the third, taking a pass from Ingersoll while cutting in front of the Freeport net and whizzing a shot past Kryzek. “I was nervous, I had no idea what states would look like,” Seaver said. “We played (Freeport) before and only won by one (goal). It was just a back-and-forth, and it was the same today, too.” Freeport continued to fight back, and Costello scored late in the third and early in the fourth to make it a one-goal game. The Rangers responded with a free position goal from Ingersoll. Kacie Lord, a senior, scored with 4:37 left to make it 7-4. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been this happy or satisfied after a loss,” Freeport coach Marcia Wood said. “I really don’t. It was a great freaking game. I’m so proud. (What stands out) is this rivalry with Greely. It’s something that team does to us that gets our energy up … I was nervous, skill-wise, but nervous intensity-wise, because I know my team would rise to this occasion.” Greely outshot Freeport, 12-9. Rangers sophomore Liv Clark was strong in the net, making five saves, including one off a free position shot. Kryzek finished with five saves for the Falcons. Greely beat Freeport 10-9 on April 24 in Cumberland. The Rangers’ only losses were against Class A programs Falmouth and Kennebunk to start the regular season.
