Controlled burn in Standish delayed until spring

A controlled burn scheduled for Saturday in Steep Falls Village Preserve in Standish has been postponed until spring due to unfavorable wind conditions.
Planned by the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust and Standish Fire-EMS, the burn was intended to help manage the preserve’s vegetation, mitigating chances of future wildfires. It would have taken place on 5 acres of the 25-acre preserve and closed the preserve for up to a few weeks while crews cleaned up.
However, Abigail Edenfield, an environmental steward with the land trust, announced Friday that wind conditions appeared problematic ahead of the burn, meaning it would have to be delayed.
Edenfield explained that winds from the northwest would push too much smoke from the fire toward Standish residents and Route 113. She also said the wind speed will be low, and therefore smoke would not disperse quickly enough.
