Region 10 Technical High School announced last week that it received a grant of more than $1 million to support career education.
The technical high school serves about 450 students from Brunswick schools, Topsham-based School Administrative District 75 and Freeport-based Regional School Unit 5. Its career education programs include nursing; welding; cybersecurity; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; plumbing and more.
The grant from MELMAC Education Foundation will be used to fund ASPIRE Region 10, a 5-year initiative focused on strengthening Maine’s workforce pipeline, the school said in a press release.
Student experiences supported through the grant could include informational interviews with local employers, connecting students to mentors, and co-op and pre-apprenticeship programs, according to the school. Staff also plans on working with pre-k through middle school students in the coming years to introduce younger students to technical education opportunities.
“Offering (extended learning opportunities) to our students will allow us to expose them to more career options and give them a head start on the career pathway planning that we focus on in our school,” Said Jason Darling, Region 10 co-op and pre-apprenticeship instructor. “It’s an awesome opportunity for them to be able to get a real world look at a potential career and how the skills they are learning translate to the workplace.”
