United Airlines will add more direct flights between Maine and California

In response to high demand, United Airlines plans to add 20 more nonstop, roundtrip flights between the Portland International Jetport and two California destinations next summer.
This year, the airline debuted seasonal direct service once a week to Los Angeles and San Francisco. Flights to San Francisco were popular enough that the airline extended that service five weeks longer than anticipated in 2026, jetport officials said.
“United made history earlier this year when they flew our first transcontinental flights,” Airport Director Paul Bradbury said in a news release Monday. “The demand exceeded our expectations and we are now seeing United at 65% more flights to California for summer 2027. We are grateful to United for the continued investment in the Portland market and look forward to the additional flights to California.”

San Francisco flights will resume Saturday-only service on May 8, 2027 and United will add a Wednesday flight for twice-weekly service starting June 23, according to the news release.
Los Angeles flights will resume Saturday-only service on June 26 and United is adding six Wednesday flights during the summer, according to the release.
“These flights make it very easy to move between the East Coast and West Coast,” Assistant Airport Director Zach Sundquist said in the news release. “United’s hubs in San Francisco and Los Angeles allow for one-stop connections to many Pacific Rim destinations, and with Wednesday service being introduced these options become even more appealing to local businesses with connections to Asia.”
