TOPSHAM — Brunswick boys soccer coach Mark Roma wasn’t worried. His team had rallied before, so he was confident it would do so again.

Second-seeded Brunswick twice battled back from a goal down before Oliver Gorchoff scored 2:22 into overtime to give the Dragons a 3-2 victory over No. 4 seed Camden Hills in the Class A North final on Tuesday in Topsham.

“I can’t say enough of all my seniors and their resiliency,” said Roma. “There was never an ounce of panic…We’ve been there. They kind of understand.”

Added Gorchoff: “It’s a surreal moment. All year leading to this, and the cross coming from my brother (Reid Gorchoff), especially, is pretty wild.”

Brunswick (16-1) advances to face Thornton Academy (14-1-2) on Saturday for a chance to claim its eighth state title. The Dragons lost to Scarborough in the state final last fall.

“We got one more,” Gorchoff said. “We fell short last year, and we know this next week of practice, we’re going to work very hard. We know where we want to be, and we’ve been here before, so we’re going to be ready.”

Play was hotly contested between these two teams — a stark contrast to their regular-season meeting on Sept. 17, which Brunswick won 7-3.

Soren Johnson scored in the sixth minute off an assist from Connor Middleton to give Camden Hills (12-5) an early lead. It lasted just 21 seconds, as Liam Rapoza found Oliver Gorchoff for a quick equalizer.

Camden Hills took the lead back with 23:45 left in the first half when Middleton scored on a set play from Johnson. Brunswick tied it again on a goal by Brendan Quinn in the 28th minute.

“I liked how we started,” Camden Hills coach Ryan Hurley said. “We scored first and we were in it. We lost a little bit of focus because we’re pretty young still in the back line and made some mistakes, but we played really well. (Brunswick is) a good team.”

Both teams nearly scored several times in the second half, but they needed more time just as they did in last year’s regional final, when Brunswick won in penalty kicks.

Following his overtime goal, Gorchoff and his teammates rushed to Brunswick’s student section, having secured another trip to the state title game.

“Got to celebrate with our student section,” Gorchoff said. “They (brought) all the support, all the fans (have) brought so much, and just felt really good to get that last one.”
