Caregiving is essential to Maine | Letter

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize those who provide care for family members and friends and to consider how prepared our communities are to support them.
Maine is the oldest state in the nation. Many of us are already caregivers, and many more will become caregivers in the future. The question isn’t whether caregiving will touch our lives, but whether we will have the support we need when it does.
Imagine having the flexibility to care for someone we love without worrying about losing income or jeopardizing our job. Caregiving brings enough challenges without having to navigate systems that make it harder. Legislation supporting caregivers can make a meaningful difference for both those receiving care and those providing it.
Our newly elected legislators will be making decisions on bills that directly affect caregivers and their families. We have an opportunity to let them know that supporting caregivers matters.
I have had the privilege of caring for members of my own family. I know firsthand that caregiving can be deeply rewarding, but it also comes with sacrifices and difficult decisions. We should support those who need care as well as those who provide it.
Reach out to our newly elected legislators. Congratulate them and ask them to make caregiving a priority. Caregivers should also share their stories. Personal experiences can help legislators understand the real-life impact of their decisions.
We are all in this together. Let’s make Maine a state prepared to care for its people.
