A warming shelter idea for Portland | Letter

The Press Herald published a report, on the Oct. 17 front page, about how the city’s warming shelter plans have run into zoning problems at its proposed site (“Portland’s warming shelter plan is hitting snags as opening date nears”). A few days earlier, the paper ran an article about how the Maine Irish Heritage Center is losing its not-for-profit status (“Portland upholds opinion that Maine Irish Heritage Center is not tax-exempt,” Oct. 15).
Maybe a deal could be cut. Maybe in exchange for having its not-for-profit status restored, this wonderful old church building could open its doors temporarily as a warming shelter this year.
We have to start thinking outside of the box.
