Wrong to sit out the Pledge of Allegiance | Letter

On a recent evening I went to speak before Portland City Council on the issue of homelessness and drug use in Portland.
The council opens the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. As a sign of respect, I expected everyone in the room, at a minimum, to stand; simply as a matter of common courtesy.
I guess in this day and age we’ve become accustomed to poor manners and unprofessionalism from our political leaders. City Councilor Anna Bullett showed that same level of disrespect by refusing to stand for the pledge.
I am an American, a veteran and a resident of Portland. I expect, from our elected officials, a certain level of respect for our country as well as for their office.
Refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance is tantamount to spitting on the flag. I don’t mind if Bullett didn’t want to recite the pledge. The most common of common courtesy demands that she stands for its recitation.
