Worried on behalf of heating oil customers in Maine | Letter

The U.S. Department of Energy’s statistical arm, the Energy Information Administration, announced that total winter heating bills, for households using heating oil, are projected to be 21% higher on average this winter compared to last winter.
The price of heating oil is forecast to average $5.26 per gallon, a 34% increase nationwide. A slightly milder winter in the Northeast is going to slightly lower consumption by about 9%, which will help to soften the total bill increase down to 21%.
I attended college in Maine and lived in Portland and Gorham in the mid-’90s. I have friends in Maine who have been struggling over high energy prices. This winter’s heating bill will require them to make difficult budgetary sacrifices elsewhere.
