Who are the true defenders of the Constitution? | Letter

Who defends the Constitution, really?
Republicans, traditionally defenders of the U.S. Constitution, are tolerating and supporting unconstitutional executive orders, indiscriminate shootings based on appearance and appointments of unqualified sycophants following the whims of our self-serving president.
A July 12 column blamed liberals for tolerating “internal decay” such as sexual behavior, homelessness or welcoming the stranger, leading toward America’s failure (“Non-judgmental tolerance, vaunted by liberals, is not a virtue”). The antidote? Patriotism and religion, also known as Christian nationalism.
Meanwhile, all branches of our federal government are actively destroying American ideals: our diverse population, freedom of religion, the right to vote, care for the sick and poor and justice itself. Many executive orders and decisions by compliant lawmakers are immoral or unconstitutional. These are not only tolerated but promoted by so-called conservatives.
“We the people” must rise above loyalty to political party, and vote for the ideals of our Constitution in November.
