White House Pool Members Suspend Coverage of President Trump After Trump‑Ordered Ban on Outlets

In a rare collective decision, the major television news networks that normally share White House coverage have agreed to halt their pooled reporting of President Donald Trump after the president announced a ban on three media outlets. The five broadcasters—FOX News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN and NBC News—issued a joint statement on Monday suspending their pooled coverage following Trump’s order to exclude CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House briefings.

The decision comes after Trump, via a post on his Truth Social account, declared that the ban was an “assault on fake news” rather than an attack on the free press. “The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish. It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America,” Trump wrote. “It is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped, NOW! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

CNN had been the White House pool’s representative that day, a role it rotates with the other outlets. The pool members said that the public’s “vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government” could not be met if an administration restricted a news organization because of its reporting. “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting,” the five networks wrote in a joint statement.

In the hours before the announcement, CNN, MS NOW and Politico issued a separate statement saying they would file a lawsuit to protect their First Amendment rights. “We are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,” the three outlets said. They added, “Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting. Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”

The ban itself is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to limit coverage by media outlets it deems hostile. In the past, attempts to bar certain reporters or organizations from the White House have been blocked by federal judges, though the administration has continued to push restrictions on specific outlets and individual journalists.

White House spokespersons did not immediately return requests for comment. Meanwhile, the five networks announced that they would not provide pooled footage or live coverage of the president’s activities for the remainder of the week, though each network remains free to produce independent coverage. The decision is likely to affect the flow of daily briefing material to the public, as the pool has long been the primary source of White House videos for television news.

The lawsuit filed by CNN, MS NOW and Politico is expected to move to the federal courts in the coming days, and the case will test the limits of presidential power to regulate news coverage. If the court upholds the ban, it could set a precedent for future executive attempts to restrict media access; if it blocks the ban, it would reaffirm the judiciary’s role in defending press freedoms.

As the story develops, reporters will be monitoring court filings and any further statements from the White House. The five networks have stated that they will resume pooled coverage once the legal dispute is resolved, but the timeline for that remains uncertain.
