What’s this? Florida man disgusted with Maine? | Letter

This newspaper’s editors do a pretty good job, so I was surprised when I came across a misplaced piece in a recent Maine Sunday Telegram. I read a letter to the editor from Mr. George Sigler (“We’re skipping Maine because Maine supported Platner,” July 17), a contribution clearly meant for the comics section. A quick review revealed that, unlike its daily counterparts, the Maine Sunday Telegram does not list a “comics” section in the index, which I guess forced its inclusion in opinion.

Despite many previous enjoyable visits and eating “lots of lobster,” Mr. Sigler bemoans the fact that “polling” showed almost 50% of Mainers would support Graham Platner for Senate. Not able to brook such behavior he goes on to say he refuses to visit “… a state that supports a person of such poor character.”

As additional squares of Platner’s checkered past came to light, more and more folks questioned his fitness for office until Platner finally revoked his candidacy. Unlike a certain Florida resident who holds a very high political office (with 56% of Florida’s popular vote), Mainers never, knowingly, nominated a candidate whose various companies declared bankruptcy a handful of times, who was found guilty of tax fraud and fined for misuse of charitable contributions or one who opined on their poor treatment of women. When inexcusable candidate behaviors emerged, Mainers showed backbone and said they needed better.

I’d invite Mr. Sigler back to Maine to both enjoy his favorite lobster pound — and to note the character and color of our lobster pots versus those of his kettles back in Florida.
