Wells Beach closed to swimmers Wednesday after shark spotted
A great white shark was sighted near Wells Beach on Wednesday morning, prompting officials to ban swimming for the day.
The Wells Fire Department said in a Facebook post that the 10-foot juvenile great white was spotted within 500 yards of the beach.
Lifeguard stands were flying a purple flag indicating that no one is allowed in the water, the department said.
Wednesday’s is the latest in a string of shark sightings off Maine’s coast.
Sharks were spotted off beaches in Scarborough twice last week, and over the weekend, a veteran lifeguard there was briefly dragged underwater after a shark grabbed hold of his rescue torpedo.

Reid State Park in Georgetown was also temporarily closed to swimming Friday due to a sighting.
