Voters should not give Collins a pass on Medicaid, ACA | Letter

Maine Hospital Association Retiree Praises Senator Collins’ Rural‑Hospital Funding, but Warns of Earlier Medicaid Cuts
A former president of the Maine Hospital Association, who recently stepped down from his post, has publicly lauded U.S. Sen. Susan Collins for providing state funds that enabled several rural Maine hospitals to purchase advanced medical equipment. The endorsement appears in a tweet from the senator’s account, in which the retired executive thanks Collins for the financial support.
The equipment, which includes high‑resolution imaging devices and upgraded patient monitoring systems, is intended to improve diagnostic capabilities in hospitals that serve remote communities. The retired executive’s tweet is part of a broader campaign that the senator has promoted in support of rural health infrastructure.
In a letter to the editor of the Press Herald dated March 2026, Ervin Snyder of Brunswick notes that Senator Collins has been involved in other health‑policy actions that may have adverse effects on Maine’s public‑health budget. Snyder points to Collins’s role in the passage of the so‑called “big, beautiful bill,” a legislative package that significantly reduced Medicaid funding for the state. According to Snyder, the cuts could lead to higher out‑of‑pocket costs for many Maine residents.
Snyder also cites Collins’s oversight of federal subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). He argues that the senator has contributed to the elimination or reduction of ACA subsidies in Maine, which could result in loss of coverage for some insurance holders. “Under Collins’ watch, many subsidies to the Affordable Care Act have been cut or eliminated,” Snyder writes. “This is another area where Maine insurance holders have lost or will not retain the coverage.”
The letter suggests that the combination of reduced Medicaid funding and the loss of ACA subsidies may increase the number of unpaid medical services delivered by rural hospitals. Snyder warns that such financial strain could impair the hospitals’ ability to maintain the equipment the senator helped procure. “All of Maine’s hospitals will feel the impact of Collins’s Medicaid and ACA actions,” the letter concludes.
Snyder urges voters to consider these issues in the upcoming election cycle. The letter was published on the Press Herald website and tagged under election, senate, and letter‑to‑the‑editor categories.
