Volunteers to pack 200,000 meals at UNE to support Mainers facing food insecurity

Meals For Maine Packs Community Support into Two UNE Campuses on September 16
The University of New England (UNE) is opening its doors to volunteers on Wednesday, Sept. 16, as Meals For Maine hosts packing events on both its Biddeford and Portland campuses. The nonprofit organization—known for assembling and delivering meal kits to people in need across Maine—has partnered with UNE to provide space for its volunteer drives.
Participants in the Biddeford and Portland sessions will work side‑by‑side to assemble ready‑to‑eat kits that are shipped to local shelters, food banks and other community recipients. While the exact timing of each session has not been released, the events promise a chance for students, staff, and community members to contribute to a statewide effort that supports families facing food insecurity.
Meals For Maine’s volunteer drives are part of a broader strategy to mobilize volunteers and reduce food waste while ensuring that nutritious meals reach those who need them most. By offering opportunities on both campuses, the organization underscores its commitment to making volunteer service accessible to a wide audience.
Volunteers who wish to join can register by contacting the Meals For Maine office or visiting the UNE volunteer coordination desk. All participants are encouraged to bring a positive attitude and a willingness to help, as the event focuses on collaboration and community building rather than specialized skill sets.
