Virginia Democrats Urge Restraint After Senate Leader’s Indictment
Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas was charged in a federal indictment that alleges she directed a multi‑year criminal scheme to distribute and launder marijuana, bribed officials and defrauded the public. The indictment, filed in 2024, names Lucas and six co‑defendants and accuses them of distributing at least 100 kilograms of marijuana and laundering about $4.5 million. Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, who previously said Trump had tried to “incite a riot” and “overturn an election,” echoed Hashmi’s call for restraint. “The allegations against Lucas must be tested through a legal process free from political interference or bias,” Jones said.
Rep. Bobby Scott joined Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine in asserting that “those charged with crime are innocent until proven guilty.” He questioned the Justice Department’s motives, noting that during Trump’s first impeachment he had called the former president’s conduct a “gross abuse of presidential power” and insisted that “no one is above the law.”
Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who chairs the Democratic Party of Virginia, also stressed Lucas’s presumption of innocence. “The allegations
