York Tops Maine Volleyball Poll After Upset of Gorham

In the most recent Varsity Maine volleyball poll released Wednesday, the York Wildcats earned the number‑one spot for the first time this season. Their 3‑0 victory over the Gorham Rams on Thursday propelled them from sixth in the previous ranking to the top of the list, a climb that highlights the volatility of the early‑season rankings.

The poll, which reflects games played before Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, was compiled by the Varsity Maine staff. It ranks the top 10 teams in the state, assigning points based on voters’ rankings and noting the number of first‑place votes each team received.

York’s ascent was anchored by a decisive win over Gorham, the team that had held the number‑one position in each of the first three polls of the year. Gorham’s loss marked the first defeat of the season for the Rams, who had been unchallenged at the summit until now. York’s triumph earned the Wildcats 80 points and three first‑place votes, surpassing Gorham’s 75 points and two first‑place votes to claim the top spot.

Thornton Academy, which gathered the most first‑place votes (four) during the vote, finished third with 72 points. The Golden Trojans had earlier secured a three‑set sweep against the Scarborough Red Storm, which had been ranked second in the initial polls before dropping to seventh after a recent loss.

Washington Academy and Cheverus/Waynflete tied for fourth place, each receiving 55 points. Washington, whose Raiders had beaten York earlier in the season, suffered its first loss to Greely, the Rangers who moved up to sixth place (52 points). Greely’s victory over Washington shifted the rankings, pushing the Red Storm down to seventh.

Other schools received points but did not make the top 10. Lewiston/Lisbon earned seven points, Falmouth five, and Narraguagus, Marshwood, and Deering received three, three, and two points respectively.

The poll also lists a few additional teams that garnered votes: Messalonskee (25 points), George Stevens (17), and Gardiner (9).

In a state where volleyball talent is increasingly spread across a wide range of programs, York’s leap to the top of the Varsity Maine poll underscores the importance of mid‑season matchups and the ever‑shifting fortunes of Maine’s high‑school teams. As the season progresses, voters will once again weigh the latest results, and the rankings are poised to shift again in the weeks ahead.
