Varsity Maine field hockey poll’s top 6 unchanged

Cheverus Leads First‑Week Maine Field Hockey Rankings; Skowhegan, Biddeford, and Others Follow
By Maine News Now
The first official Varsity Maine field‑hockey poll for the 2026 fall season was released on Tuesday, September 15, confirming the top six teams and revealing shifts among the rest of the state’s squads. The poll, compiled by Varsity Maine staff members who evaluate games played up to the deadline, keeps Cheverus at the summit while reshuffling several contenders that opened their seasons on a winning streak.
Cheverus Stays Unbeaten and Unanimous
Cheverus, the Stags from Portland, maintains its position as the unanimous No. 1 team in the state. The school remains undefeated, having posted a perfect record in its first games of the season. The Stags’ 90 points, earned through nine first‑place votes, reflect a consensus that the team is the most dominant force in Maine field hockey.
Skowhegan and Biddeford Occupy the Upper Ranks
Skowhegan, the River Hawks, holds the second spot with 79 points, following closely behind the Stags. Biddeford, the Tigers, earns third place with 69 points, indicating a solid start to its season. Both teams have displayed early promise and are poised to compete for the top spot as the season progresses.
Mid‑Table Movements
The fourth slot is occupied by Mt. Ararat, the Eagles, with 63 points, while Belfast, the Lions, claims fifth place with 41 points. Yarmouth, the Clippers, rounds out the top six, earning 34 points for a sixth‑place finish.
Newcomers and Rising Stars
The poll also highlighted several teams that have begun the season on a winning streak but had not yet been ranked last week.
- Messalonskee Eagles moved from 10th to 7th after a 3‑0 start, earning 26 points.
- Sanford/Kennebunk Rams ranked eighth, boasting an impressive 18‑1 cumulative score over three games since a double‑overtime loss to Biddeford.
- Nokomis Warriors, Camden Hills Windjammers, and Freeport Falcons entered the poll as unranked teams last week, all remaining unbeaten. They are now tied for ninth place, receiving 19, 15, and 15 points respectively.
Other schools that received points in the poll include Thornton Academy (10 points), Fryeburg Academy (5 points), Gorham (3 points), and Leavitt (3 points).
How the Poll Works
Varsity Maine’s rankings are compiled based on games played before Tuesday, September 15. Staff members vote on the top 10 teams, with each first‑place vote recorded in parentheses. Points are tallied for each team, determining their rank. The poll is released weekly and reflects the evolving performance of Maine’s high‑school field‑hockey programs.
Looking Ahead
With the season still in its early stages, the rankings are expected to shift as teams play more games. Cheverus’s unbeaten record keeps it at the top, but the close competition among Skowhegan, Biddeford, and Mt. Ararat suggests a tightly contested season ahead. Fans and coaches alike will be watching to see if teams like Messalonskee and Sanford/Kennebunk can maintain momentum and climb further up the rankings.
