Gorham Holds Top Spot in Varsity Maine Baseball Poll as Postseason Begins

Gorham has done what no other team in the state has managed this spring: stay at No. 1 for three consecutive weeks. The Rams head into the postseason with an 15-1 record and an 11-game win streak, firmly holding the top position in the Varsity Maine baseball poll released this week.

The poll, voted on by the Varsity Maine staff and based on games played before Tuesday, June 9, 2026, shows Gorham collecting eight first-place votes and 89 total points — a commanding lead over the rest of the field. South Portland sits in second with 79 points, followed by Oxford Hills with one first-place vote and 75 points. Cheverus rounds out the top four at 50 points.

Gorham's dominance extends beyond the rankings. The Rams are the top seed in the Class A South Heal point standings, putting them in prime position as the postseason gets underway.

Oxford Hills has been nearly as impressive. The Vikings are 15-1 and have won nine straight games, good enough to top the Class A North standings. Their lone loss is the only thing keeping them from matching Gorham's record.

In Class B, Ellsworth and Fryeburg Academy have been the class of their respective regions. Ellsworth, also 15-1 with a nine-game win streak, sits atop the B North standings and jumped Fryeburg in this week's poll to claim the No. 7 ranking. Fryeburg Academy, now 13-3, dropped to eighth but remains the top seed in B South.

One notable change in the rankings is Cony's return to the top 10. The Rams are ranked for the first time since May 5, checking in at No. 10 with 9 points. Elsewhere, Mt. Ararat and Bangor swapped the fifth and sixth spots, with Mt. Ararat moving up to 47 points and Bangor sliding to 37.

Class C leaders Washington Academy (North) and Monmouth Academy (South) are among the teams receiving votes outside the top 10, along with Scarborough and Leavitt.

The full top 10: Gorham 89, South Portland 79, Oxford Hills 75, Cheverus 50, Mt. Ararat 47, Bangor 37, Ellsworth 33, Fryeburg Academy 31, Thornton Academy 24, and Cony 9.

With four teams seeded No. 1 in their respective regions — Gorham in A South, Oxford Hills in A North, Ellsworth in B North, and Fryeburg in B South — the postseason is shaping up to feature some of the most competitive matchups Maine high school baseball has seen in years.
