Michigan Senate Race Heats Up as Vance Calls for Policy‑Focused Debate
A rally held this Monday in downtown Detroit turned into a sharp exchange between former Representative JD Vance and Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee, former mayor Abdul El‑Sayed. Vance, who has been a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, urged the candidate to “focus on substantive policy issues instead of attacking his wife,” saying that “people of Michigan think it’s kind of weird when you talk about another guy’s wife.”
The event was organized by MAGA Inc., a super‑PAC aligned with the Trump administration. Vance took the stage to criticize El‑Sayed’s positions on immigration and the auto industry, saying that the nominee’s support for allowing “illegal aliens” to obtain driver’s licenses could undermine wages for American truckers. “Just a few years ago, Abdul El‑Sayed said we need to make sure that illegal aliens have driver’s licenses in this country. He would love to undercut the wages of American truckers,” Vance told the audience.
The former Detroit mayor countered by labeling Vance’s remarks as “a terrible evil,” describing them as efforts to “sell out morals for a little bit of power.” “Evil is ripping healthcare away from working people in exchange for tax breaks for billionaires,” El‑Sayed replied. He also warned voters that “Michigan is better than being lectured to by sock puppets from Ohio and Florida,” and called for a November election that would “send Mike Rogers packing.”
Vance’s comments about El‑Sayed’s wife, Usha Vance, sparked criticism. Critics argued that the remark was a veiled attack on the woman’s Indian heritage, noting that Vance’s own in‑laws are immigrants. El‑Sayed responded that Vance’s words suggested a hierarchy of “Americanness” based on family history, a claim the former mayor denied.
The debate touches on two long‑standing policy differences. El‑Sayed, who served as mayor of Detroit from 2014 to 2019, has repeatedly called for a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and supported the issuance of standard driver’s licenses to those in the country illegally—a stance he first voiced in 2018. He has, however, not pushed for commercial driver’s licenses for the same group. Vance, meanwhile, has framed his campaign as a defense of Michigan’s auto workers, emphasizing truck safety and opposing policies that he claims weaken the state’s industrial base.
Despite their clashes, both politicians say they are committed to using tariffs to benefit American industry. The campaign for the open Senate seat has seen both sides rallying their base, with Vance emphasizing policy over personal attacks and El‑Sayed underscoring his record on Michigan’s workers and his willingness to challenge Republican narratives on immigration.
The Democratic and Republican nominees have not yet released formal responses to the exchange. As the November election approaches, the two candidates appear to be sharpening their messages on the policy front while attempting to distance themselves from the more personal jabs that have punctuated this month’s campaign.
