Balogun's Late First-Half Strike Lifts USMNT Past Bosnia and Herzegovina into Round of 16

The United States men's national team is moving on.

Folarin Balogun broke through with a go-ahead goal in first-half stoppage time, sending the Americans past Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-0 in Wednesday's Round of 32 World Cup match and into the tournament's knockout round.

The Monaco striker had the ball in the net earlier in the match, only to see it waved off for offside. He would not miss his second chance.

As halftime approached, Balogun found space in the Bosnian defense and received a precise pass from teammate Malik Tillman. This time, he finished cleanly, and the goal stood.

Balogun marked the moment with a tribute to NBA legend LeBron James, celebrating with the basketball star's signature "silencer" move.

The victory puts the United States 45 minutes away from advancing to the Round of 16, with the team carrying momentum despite having lost its final group-stage match to Turkey last week.

"This game is about us—what we're prepared to do and what we must do to advance," Balogun said. "It's crunch time. This is the business end, and this is the stage where, in my opinion, the big players step forward and carry the pressure and make things happen."

Balogun has now contributed three goals across the tournament.

The Americans' historical World Cup record offers context for the significance of advancing. The U.S. reached the semifinals in the inaugural tournament in 1930 when they won their group. Their only previous knockout-stage victory came in 2002, when they defeated Mexico in the Round of 16.

This year's expanded 48-nation format introduced an additional knockout round, creating more opportunities for teams to progress deeper into the competition.
