Pentagon Reveals Record Drone Interceptions at Southern Border

The U.S. military intercepted approximately 100 suspected cartel drones along the southern border during August, marking the first time the Pentagon has disclosed the frequency of its counter-drone operations, according to senior defense officials.

The operations, conducted by Task Force–Southern Border, employed specialized counter-drone equipment integrated by other military units, including sophisticated laser systems, according to a War Department official who spoke with reporters Thursday.

"The United States is employing defensive counter-drone technology to protect our personnel and border security operations from cartel-linked drone threats," said Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson.

All missions were carefully planned and coordinated with Mexican military and border authorities to prevent interference or unintended confrontations between forces operating on either side of the international boundary, Wilson added.

"These actions are closely coordinated with Mexican military and border authorities to ensure safety and deconfliction on both sides of the border," she said.

The disclosure represents a significant departure from the Pentagon's typical secrecy regarding border security operations. Until now, the military had not specified how frequently its counter-drone technology was being deployed against suspected smuggling and surveillance aircraft operated by criminal organizations.

The operations form part of a broader administration strategy to rapidly expand defenses against unmanned aerial threats, combining multiple technologies with specially trained personnel and updated military authorities. Defense officials emphasized that no single system is being relied upon to address the evolving challenge.

"So, the president directed, the Department of War executed, the first ever plan and strategy to use direct military force to defend the homeland from this threat," a senior administration official said during an earlier press call this week.

The official cited dramatic results from the aggressive posture toward cartels operating across the Western Hemisphere, including lethal strikes against alleged drug traffickers.

"The effects have been spectacular, and we've seen the largest and steepest reduction in U.S. casualties inflicted by the cartels in American history," the official said.

The revelation comes as the Trump administration continues to pursue a more confrontational approach toward organized crime groups, utilizing military assets in ways that have drawn both praise from supporters concerned about border security and criticism from those questioning the expanded use of force in domestic law enforcement matters.
