UNE football loses on last-play field goal

In a nonconference football game held Saturday in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester Polytechnic Institute edged the University of New England 22-21 on a 50-yard field goal by Nathan Napier as the clock expired. The Engineers, improving to 1-1, scored five points in the final seven seconds to secure the victory. With UNE leading 21-19, its punter Cam Durkin attempted to run out the clock on fourth-and-8 from his team's 10-yard line, but the play resulted in a safety that trimmed the deficit to two points. The subsequent kickoff by UNE traveled only 13 yards to the WPI 33, giving the Engineers a chance to set up the winning kick. Napier then connected from 50 yards to seal the win.
UNE, now 0-2, had rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to take the lead. In the third quarter, Chris Lang threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Quinn Carlson, and on the first play of the fourth period, Lang connected with Max Viglione on a 53-yard touchdown pass. Lang completed 11 of 23 attempts for 157 yards and two touchdowns. WPI's Dylan Gallo went 17 for 34 with 185 yards and two touchdowns.
