Trumpeter Jesse McGuire Sings the National Anthem Despite Trumpet Malfunction at Diamondbacks–Yankees Game

PHOENIX – On Saturday night at Chase Field, the Arizona Diamondbacks marked the 25th anniversary of their 2001 World Series title with a dramatic matchup against the New York Yankees. The game also featured a memorable moment from veteran trumpeter Dr. Jesse McGuire, who had once served as the lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and had performed the national anthem for the Diamondbacks during their historic 2001 championship run.

McGuire, 68, took the field to perform the anthem for the anniversary celebration. The trumpeter, who had earned a World Series ring for his 2001 performance, was slated to play once more for the team’s 25‑year milestone. However, the trumpeter’s instrument began to malfunction early in “The Star‑Spangled Banner.” After realizing the problem could not be fixed before the anthem concluded, McGuire sang the rest of the song in front of the sold‑out crowd.

The fans responded with cheers and a standing ovation as McGuire finished the anthem. He later returned to the field in the seventh inning and performed “God Bless America,” a gesture that was widely praised by both teams.

In a game that was itself a tribute to the 2001 victory, the Diamondbacks won 4‑2, with Pavin Smith delivering a two‑run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the win over the Yankees. The victory preserved the Diamondbacks’ hopes of advancing further in the postseason.

After the game, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo thanked McGuire for his patriotic performance. “He did a great job,” Lovullo said. “He handled the situation well and gave the fans a memorable moment.”

McGuire, who had also performed the anthem for three U.S. presidents during his career, expressed no frustration over the trumpet’s failure. “I’m happy to have shared the moment with everyone,” he said. “It was a privilege to play for this team again.”

The game, which was part of a weekend series against the Yankees, drew attention not only for its competitive play but also for the historic significance it carried for fans and players alike. The Diamondbacks’ 25‑year anniversary celebration proved to be a fitting tribute to the franchise’s past triumphs and a hopeful sign of its future.
