Trump would flay Collins if she really stood up to him | Letter

For anyone still considering a vote for Sen. Susan Collins, here’s a thought experiment.
If Collins were truly independent of Trump, if she offered any real resistance, just imagine how he’d ridicule her. Imagine how cruel and petty and personal and demeaning his attacks on her would be.
That he doesn’t attack her — in public, anyway — makes clear how sure he is of her; sure of her fear, her silence, her loyalty.
That loyalty costs us Mainers dearly, in cuts to Medicaid, SNAP and support for rural healthcare; in the politicization of the Supreme Court and our loss of Roe; in stormtrooper brutality against our immigrant neighbors; in a twisted economy that suffers tariffs, favors the rich and drives hardworking people into poverty.
Imagine the force of that ridicule — of its awful, soulless cruelty — as Susan Collins must, every time she sacrifices her threadbare integrity to President Trump.
