Trump Calls NASA Press Conference to Celebrate Roman Space Telescope Launch
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — In an unexpected moment during a Sunday press conference, President Donald Trump dialed into NASA's Kennedy Space Center to personally congratulate the agency on the successful launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
The telescope launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Florida's Kennedy Space Center, where NASA officials confirmed it successfully separated from the launch vehicle and began transmitting telemetry data as it headed toward its destination nearly 1 million miles from Earth.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman was mid-briefing when he stepped away from the podium, cell phone in hand. "The president is excited about Roman," Isaacman told attendees before returning moments later with Trump on speakerphone.
During the call, the president thanked the team and joked about his reason for reaching out. "I just called Jared to find out, is there anything negative that I should know about, like, it will never be able to return? Little things like that," Trump said.
Isaacman assured the president the mission was proceeding flawlessly. "He said, 'No, it's looking great. It couldn't be better. And it was another great successful launch,'" Trump recalled. "Jared is doing a fantastic job. You are doing a fantastic job, and I'm supplying you all that money!"
Trump also reflected on the agency's transformation since taking office, suggesting NASA and the nation had reached new heights. "We're the hottest there is. We're the hottest in space," he said. "So let's keep it all going. You're a big part of it."
Isaacman expressed confidence that the Roman Space Telescope would soon become as widely recognized as the Hubble and James Webb telescopes. He outlined the spacecraft's journey ahead: traveling to Lagrange point L2, a gravitationally stable region of space, where it will begin transmitting imagery and data that he said would contribute to "world-changing science."
The launch marks a significant milestone for NASA's astrophysics division, placing the next-generation observatory on course to explore cosmic mysteries ranging from dark energy to distant exoplanetary systems.
