Trump ending war with Iran is nothing to celebrate | Letter
100%
One of the most famous photographs ever taken is of an American sailor passionately kissing a woman in Times Square while celebrating Japan’s surrender ending World War II. Fast forward 81 years and here we are, our most recent war of choice against Iran (seemingly) ended with an entirely different kind of surrender. We may never know just how President Trump was sold on starting this disastrous conflict. What we can know is that the U.S. and our Israeli “ally” launched massive strikes that I’m sure the glassy-eyed sycophants and aging frat boys who make up the Trump Cabinet assured our president would topple the Iranian regime. Instead, the Iranians responded with a ferocity that shocked everyone. The Gulf sheikdoms, reliable toadies to Trump and Netanyahu, found themselves living under siege and under embargo. Millions of Israelis found themselves sleeping in bomb shelters. An awkward reversal of circumstances for a nation that has spent the last three years dropping bombs on people cowering in tents. The world economy was thrown into tailspin. So, where are we now? Iran survives, and can say — without lying — it managed to bloody the noses of both Israel and the U.S. In 80 years we went from spontaneous, victorious joy to a shameful humbling. **Jeremy Smith** _Old Orchard Beach_ Copy the Story Link Tagged: [letter to the editor](https://www.pressherald.com/tag/letter-to-the-editor/)
