President Trump Announces White House Ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico

Washington, D.C. – On Friday, President Donald Trump used his Truth Social feed to declare that the White House would no longer allow reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico onto its grounds. “I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump wrote in a post that circulated among his supporters.

The announcement came after a brief press briefing in the Oval Office, where Trump said he was “sick of” the outlets’ “cumulative stories” over the years. “I don't think that a court should allow fake news to be written day, after day, after day. I think that somebody has a right to keep them away,” he added.

Trump’s decision comes amid a long history of tension between his administration and the media. Previous attempts to bar individual journalists and certain outlets from the White House have been halted by federal courts, citing First Amendment protections. The current ban, however, was described by Trump as a direct response to what he considers “fake news.”

Reactions from the Media

CNN, which is part of a rotating pool of five networks—including Fox News—has traditionally covered the president’s travels. The network confirmed that it would still be broadcasting from its tent on Media Row outside the White House. “CNN stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting,” a spokesperson said on X. “We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government. Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally‑protected right.”

Politico issued a similar statement to Fox News Digital, saying the outlet would continue to “fairly report on this White House and future ones” and would “vigorously defend our First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict them.”

A spokesperson for MS NOW declined to comment on the Trump announcement.

Statements from the White House

A senior White House official reportedly informed CNN’s top brass that their journalists would be prohibited from the White House grounds beginning Saturday. CNN’s senior correspondent, Peter Doocy, confirmed that the network would still be on the outside, but noted that the official’s warning had been received.

During the press briefing, Trump also addressed concerns that his move might intimidate the press. He denied that intent. “I am not trying to intimidate the press from doing its job,” Trump said.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the Republican governor of Arkansas and former White House press secretary under Trump’s first administration, was present at the briefing, which focused on healthcare. Sanders emphasized the First Amendment, stating, “I think it’s hard for you to argue against a free press when you’re literally standing in the Oval Office asking questions of the president of the United States. He has been more accessible and easier to talk to than any president in history.”

Broader Context

CNN will lead network pool coverage at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, where Trump is set to appear. The ban comes as the administration continues to criticize what it labels “seditious” coverage of foreign policy issues, most recently on the Iran war.

The decision will test the limits of presidential authority over the press and may prompt legal challenges. While the White House has not yet issued a formal memorandum outlining the ban’s scope, reporters and media outlets have been informed that they will not be permitted on White House premises beginning Saturday.
