Maine Troopers Warn of Standing Water Hazards on State Roads

Maine troopers have issued a statewide safety advisory urging motorists to reduce speed, extend following distance, and exercise extra caution when driving through areas with standing water.

The warning comes after recent heavy rains that have left patches of pooled water on many of the state’s highways. Troopers say that such water can increase the risk of hydroplaning, sudden loss of vehicle control, and even vehicle damage if a driver attempts to drive through a large puddle.

“Drivers need to slow down and stay alert for standing water,” said a spokesperson for the Maine State Police. “When the road surface is slick, a small amount of water can cause a vehicle to lose traction and potentially spin or skid.”

The advisory applies to all motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Troopers recommend that drivers:

• Reduce speed well below posted limits when water is present.
• Increase the distance between their vehicle and the one ahead to provide a larger safety margin.
• Keep a close eye on the road surface for sudden changes in depth, especially near road shoulders and drainage ditches.
• Avoid riding over large puddles or “black ice” patches that can develop when water freezes.

The Department of Transportation has noted that many of the state’s rural roads lack adequate drainage, making them more prone to water accumulation after a storm. “We’re working to identify and repair problem areas as quickly as possible,” said a DOT representative. “In the meantime, we rely on the public to take extra precautions.”

Maine troopers have set up additional patrols on several key corridors, including Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 201, to help monitor traffic conditions and assist drivers who may become stranded or involved in accidents. The state has also increased communication through its official Twitter account, posting real‑time updates on road closures and hazardous conditions.

While the weather remains unpredictable, troopers remind residents that maintaining a safe speed and distance is the most effective way to avoid accidents in wet conditions. “It’s better to drive a little slower than to risk a serious incident,” the spokesperson said. “We’re all on the road together, so let’s keep each other safe.”

The advisory is in effect until the weather improves and road conditions are assessed as safe by state officials. Maine troopers will continue to monitor the situation and adjust the guidance as necessary.
