Thornton Academy Reigns as No. 1 in Maine’s Varsity Football Polls After a 43‑13 Victory Over Portland
Saco, Oct. 3 – Thornton Academy’s Golden Trojans secured their fifth consecutive win of the season, outclassing the Portland Bulldogs 43‑13 in a Saturday showdown in Saco. The 29‑point burst in the second half moved Thornton to the top of the Varsity Maine 11‑man football poll, where they now lead by a single point over second‑place Bonny Eagle.
A One‑Side Finish
The Trojans’ defense held Portland to just 13 points, while the offense tallied 43, the second most in the league this season. Thornton averaged 45 points per game and allowed only 8.2, and the recent victory brings the tally to 225 points scored and 41 points allowed over five games.
Portland, meanwhile, managed to stay within striking distance until halftime, keeping the score close at 17‑17 when the Trojans took control. The second‑half surge, featuring 29 unanswered points, proved too much for the Bulldogs.
