Varsity Maine field hockey poll locks in Cheverus at No. 1 as schedule heats up

A weeks-long streak of consistency continues to define Maine’s high school field hockey landscape. The latest Varsity Maine poll, released this week and based on games played before Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, sees the Cheverus Stags hold firm at the top for the third straight ranking period, accompanied by an unchanged top four and a top six that has remained static since the season’s opening polls.

Cheverus accumulates 90 total points and nine first-place votes, cementing its position as the class of the field. Skowhegan sits alone in second at 81 points, followed by Biddeford at 69 and Mt. Ararat at 54. Yarmouth rounds out the top five with 49, while Belfast drops to sixth at 41. Sanford/Kennebunk holds seventh at 35, and Leavitt and Camden Hills are deadlocked at eighth, each collecting 20 points. Greely completes the top 10 at 13 points.

Behind the top 10, Thornton Academy and Nokomis gather seven and six votes respectively, while Freeport, Foxcroft Academy, and Winthrop/Maranacook each receive single votes to round out the scoring.

What makes this week’s poll particularly notable is the stubborn stability of the early-season pecking order. The top four teams have gone untouched across the first three ballots, and the top six have followed the same pattern — a rarity this early in the campaign that speaks to the depth of preparation and early-season form already on display across the state.

That stability will be tested in the days ahead. On Monday, Skowhegan hosts Mt. Ararat in a matchup between two of the poll’s elite. Next Tuesday, Biddeford welcomes Cheverus to what figures to be one of the season’s most closely watched contests. Both games carry the implicit weight of poll implications, though the current standings suggest any major reshuffling may have to wait until the next ranking cycle.

The varsity Maine staff will again tally results after games through the upcoming weekend, but for now, the picture is clear: Cheverus owns the summit, the middle of the poll is notably tight, and the coming week presents the first real opportunities for the field hockey power structure to flex.

Varsity Maine’s field hockey poll is compiled by staff and reflects competitive results through early October. The next full ranking update is expected following the conclusion of the week’s scheduled contests.
