Tom Cruise admits rumors about his 'intense' behavior on movie sets are true

Tom Cruise, the 64‑year‑old actor known for his work in “Top Gun,” “Mission: Impossible,” and other blockbusters, said in a 2026 GQ cover interview that his reputation for intensity is not a façade but a core part of his work ethic.

Cruise, who has appeared on the cover of the magazine this year, explained that he sets clear expectations with everyone he works with. “I expect a lot and I’m up‑front about it,” he told GQ. “It’s like: ‘The rumors are true. And do you want this?’” The actor added, with a laugh, “Trust me, the rumors are true. I’ll be here before you. What experience do you want?”

He said his intensity has been a part of him since childhood. “Even when I was a kid, they were like, ‘Oh, come on, Tom. You’re so intense.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know what to say. I am intense,’” Cruise said. He noted that he has a good sense of humor about the label. “I got a very good sense of humor about it,” he added.

According to Cruise, his focus comes from a genuine curiosity and a desire to master his craft. “When I’m interested in something, I want to learn it. I want to understand it,” he said. “And you want to blast through the confusion and kind of build up that ability.” He also emphasized that filmmaking is more than stunts or box‑office numbers. “I say, ‘Understand the tools, then go create what you want to create,’” he said.

When asked about his stance on television and streaming platforms, Cruise was supportive. “I have nothing against cable or TV or Netflix. I think it’s great. Create jobs and everything,” he said. “But what I like about cinema is it is all of us coming together in a room and sharing an experience.”

Cruise described how much of a movie’s work starts long before the cameras roll. “Movies don’t just start when you’re shooting it and on a movie set. There’s sometimes years of preparation,” he said. He said that when he’s not on a set he is “preparing for the next. I’m always studying something. I’m always learning something, always.”

The actor has a long history of performing his own stunts, including riding a motorcycle off a cliff, hanging from an aircraft mid‑flight, and other death‑defying feats. When questioned about fear, Cruise said, “Look, I think you could look at my life and go: I like standing on the edge of a cliff physically and metaphorically. I want to understand people. I want to understand life and cultures. We’re looking at life.” He added that he seeks common ground with audiences: “Everyone has a different subjective reality of what they think about life, about people. There is common ground in humanity, and I’m looking for that common ground.”

Cruise’s next major role is in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming film “Digger.” He portrays oil magnate Digger Rockwell, a character whose actions threaten an $18 trillion global catastrophe. “Digger marks my first major starring role outside the Top Gun and Mission: Impossible franchises in years,” Cruise said. The film’s official synopsis describes Rockwell as a man attempting to prove he is “humanity’s hero before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”

As Cruise continues to blend his intense performance style with a dedication to learning and collaboration, the “Top Gun” star remains a defining figure in modern action cinema.
