Minnesota Timberwolves Guard Anthony Edwards to Undergo Knee Surgery, Sit Out Two Months

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced on Tuesday that forward‑guard Anthony Edwards will have an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee. The surgery will sideline the two‑time All‑NBA selection for roughly two months, according to the team’s medical staff and ESPN.

Edwards, who has been a force on offense for the Timberwolves this season, suffered a knee injury in the club’s 129‑112 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. He was seen in the Raptors’ locker room clutching his right knee, prompting a diagnosis of a “day‑to‑day” issue by head coach Chris Finch. Although Finch did not express concern that the injury was more serious than a simple flare‑up, the team’s decision to opt for surgery indicates it is not a minor strain.

Despite the injury, Edwards played the full 41 minutes in the Timberwolves’ Monday night contest against the Cleveland Cavaliers, a game that was the second half of a back‑to‑back. He poured in 47 points, the most of any player in the NBA that season, but the Timberwolves fell to Cleveland in overtime, 127‑125. Coach Finch called the injury designation a “daily situation” after the game, noting that it was a routine decision.

The decision to have Edwards undergo arthroscopic surgery comes after a history of knee issues. He missed the final stretch of last season because of runner’s knee on the same leg, and he suffered a hyper‑extended left knee during the first round of the playoffs when the Timberwolves beat the Denver Nuggets in six games. That season he missed 21 games, the most in his career.

“I’ve given the knee a lot of time over the summer,” Edwards told reporters. “I wanted to keep my knees healthy this year, so I made sure to get plenty of rest.” He had no reported problems during training camp and began the season with a high level of play. In the first four games of the season, he became only the fourth player in NBA history to score 45 or more points in each of the first four games of a season, including a 47‑point outing against the Miami Heat on opening night.

The Timberwolves’ schedule will now look different while Edwards recovers. The team will likely lean on players such as Ayo Dosunmu and Bones Hyland to fill the gap left by the All‑Star guard. The club also has a young La Melo Ball, who is in his first season with the Timberwolves, as a potential offensive spark. Coach Finch said that the roster depth will be tested in the coming weeks as the team navigates the absence of Edwards.

Edwards is expected to miss about two months, which would place his return sometime in late January or early February, depending on his recovery progress. The Timberwolves will keep the franchise’s playoff aspirations alive by relying on the resilience of its remaining core and the potential of its younger players.

For the Minnesota Timberwolves, the next few weeks will be a test of depth and adaptability, with the team hoping to keep their momentum going while their star guard undergoes knee surgery and recovers.
