Senator Tim Scott Opens Up About Near‑Fatal Car Crash that Ended His Teenage Football Dreams

Dallas, Texas – During a late‑night interview on “Hang Out with Sean Hannity,” South Carolina Senator Tim Scott recounted the traumatic car crash that cut short his promising high‑school football career and, according to him, was a moment of divine intervention.

Scott, who served as a guest speaker at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas last week, described driving his mother to work one early‑morning. While heading home, he fell asleep at the wheel. He said he was jolted awake by the sound of his tires on gravel. “I slammed on the brakes and jerked the steering wheel,” he told Hannity, “and the car spun across lanes of traffic before it hit the median.” The impact forced him through the windshield, and he held onto the steering wheel as the vehicle crashed.

The collision left Scott with a broken ankle and serious back injuries. The injuries effectively ended his chances of earning a college football scholarship, which were already dwindling as he was “moving up the ranks” in high school.

Despite the setback, a partial scholarship offer arrived from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. “I later gave my life and heart to Jesus Christ while attending a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting at the school,” Scott said, explaining how faith became a central part of his recovery.

When asked about the moment of crisis, Scott expressed a belief that a higher power had saved him. “I called for help, which for me was, I just yelled, ‘Jesus,’” he recalled. “I feel like, in an unusually miraculous way, some power—an angel, in my opinion—protected me through all of that carnage.” He also reflected on the broader implications of that experience for his public life, noting how it strengthened his resolve to serve.

The interview, available on iHeartRadio, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other platforms, was part of a series of testimonies shared by GOP officials during the convention. While Scott’s story is framed within his personal faith journey, the event is also a reminder of how unexpected setbacks can redirect life’s course.

For Senator Scott, the crash ended his football aspirations but opened a new path toward public service. As the convention concluded, he reiterated his commitment to the causes that now define his role in the Senate, while acknowledging that the accident was a pivotal turning point that shaped both his personal and political trajectory.
